CBSE schools to shake hands with PM’s sanitation move

Schools with good sanitation will get Rs 25,000 to Rs 1 lakh as per ratings

KOCHI: The CBSE has asked schools affiliated to it to join the Swacch Bharat Abhiyan, the Central Government's programme to improve the overall sanitation conditions across the country.

The management, students and teachers of schools have been asked to raise the sanitation conditions on their premises including providing adequate toilets.

Schools with good sanitation ratings will be given 1 lakh to 25,000 as per their ratings, the CBSE has informed them.

The CBSE says it’s joining the ‘Swachh Bharat Swachh Vidyalaya Campaign’ to be launched from September 25 to October 31 by the Ministry of Human Resources Development in response to the call of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

CBSE has suggested activities like talks by a few children on different aspects of cleanliness in the school assembly every day, especially with regard to the sayings and teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, on cleanliness and hygiene.

Cleaning of classrooms, laboratories, libraries etc, cleaning of any statue installed in the school, of toilets and drinking water areas, of kitchen sheds, stores etc, of playgrounds, maintenance of school buildings including whitewashing and painting, organizing essay, painting competitions, debates, contests etc. on cleanliness and hygiene are prescribed as part of the campaign.

During the week, the schools are also encouraged to fill in their sanitation status online at www.schoolsanitation.com.

The schools with good sanitation ratings (after verification) will be felicitated.

The highest scoring schools with ‘green rating’ will get a cash award of '1 lakh, if the rating is ‘blue’ the school will get a cash award of '75,000, and if ‘yellow’, '25,000. However if they are ‘Black’ or ‘Red’, they need to improve.

The schools will continue the exercise up to August 15, 2015.
