Stray gaurs drive locals to throng collectorate
Movement of stray gaurs in and around Manjanakorai had created panic for the residents
Ooty: The stray Indian gaur scare has virtually driven residents of the Manjanakorai area on the outskirts of this hill town to the collectorate to urge the administration to find a solution.
About 250 residents of Manjanakorai thronged the collectorate on Monday morning to express their anxiety due to the escalating man-animal conflict in their area in recent times and also to insist that the district administration evolve suitable mechanisms to end this menace before there was any further loss to residents there by the straying gaurs.
Saying that the movement of stray gaurs in and around Manjanakorai had created panic for the residents, Ms Mohaneshwari, a resident, said only in recent times had the gaurs begun to enter the residential area. A couple of them are often seen standing on the Manjanakorai road. "The very sight of the gaur on the road makes the residents confine themselves to the four walls of their houses. Residents are scared to move about freely or to send their wards to schools," she added.
Pleading for action from the district administration and the forest administration to find a lasting solution to the stray gaur problem in the Manjanakorai area, Mr Madhavan, a long-time resident there, said the problem becomes unmanageable at night when stray gaurs on the roadside attempt to attack passersby.
As residents have to walk nearly 500 metres between the bus stop and their homes, the administration should come forward to operate buses up to Manjanakorai. This would at least help the residents reach home safely, overcoming the threat from the stray gaurs on the roadside, he added.
