Rain wreaks havoc in Assam, Meghalaya

Both Assam and Meghalaya are facing floods after heavy rains in last two days

Guwahati: Incessant rains for last 24 hours have crippled the normal life in the capital city of Guwahati on Monday with state administration calling National Disaster Relief Force to help the people marooned in different low-lying areas of the city. In Meghalaya's South West Garo Hills district At least seven persons were reported killed after heavy rains lashed the area inundating over 100 villages and affecting over one lakh people, officials said.

With the IMD predicting rains and thundershowers for next two days, the Assm state administration on Monday declared holiday in all the educational institutions of Guwahati tillthe next order. The deputy commissioner of the Kamrup Metro district however said that there was no loss of life in Guwahati. However, there were few incidents of land sliding in VIP road areas of the city, no loss of life was reported.

The administration has also made an appeal to the people residing in the landslide-prone hills of the city to move to safer places. Meanwhile, the Centre on Monday reviewed the flood situation in Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and Meghalaya and asked all concerned to expedite relief and rehabilitation works.
