Chumar is a China ploy
New Delhi: There is a growing view among security agencies that the recent spate of incursions by the Chinese may well be a calculated move by them to pressurise the BJP-led government at the Centre to expedite resolving the border dispute.
Government sources said that in the last few days, particularly in the runup to the visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping, Beijing had conveyed to New Delhi that the border dispute mechanism should gain momentum. The process had been initiated by former national security adviser Shiv Shankar Menon during the UPA-II regime but the Chinese apparently were not happy with what was described as its slow pace.
Following a series of meeting at the highest levels between the NSA, ministries of home, defence, external affairs and top intelligence agencies like R&AW and Intelligence Bureau, the thinking within the government now is that Chinese are using the incursions as a deliberate ploy to pressurise the new government at the Centre.
It is precisely for this reason, sources added, that a major incursion happened in Ladakh’s Chumar sector even while the Chinese President was visiting India. Security analysts feel that the People’s Liberation Army will not be in a hurry to move back from their positions.
The Chinese are well equipped with tents, food, sophisticated weapons indicating that they were prepared for the long haul. Sources said there was a status quo in Chumar region with both Indian and Chinese troops maintaining their positions.
