Chikungunya threat in West Kochi under control

Despite instructions steps have not been taken to supply potable drinking water in these affected areas

Kochi: The fear of chikungunya outbreak in West Kochi area is under control, according to the Health Department authorities.

“The situation is under control as there is no clustering of fresh cases. On Monday, four suspected cases were reported from Chakkamadam. People are being made aware of the symptoms of the disease, prevention and vector control,” said DMO, Dr Hazeena Muhammad.

Health wing of the city Corporation will start homeopathy medical camps in West Kochi from Tuesday. Three mobile homeopathy units will be pressed into service. The civic authorities have also intensified sanitation drive in vulnerable areas. “Vector control measures like fogging and spraying saline water, in drains and canals, are being carried out,” said T K Ashraf, the health standing committee chairman.

Meanwhile, the health committee chairman rubbished the reports of chikungunya outbreak. “The district medical office is sounding a false alarm. The figure of 35 cases is not true. Most cases reported are from Fort Kochi, Mattancherry areas, which are only suspected cases,” he added.

However, despite the instruction of district medical officer, steps have not been taken to supply potable drinking water in these affected areas.
