Mumbai: Farah Khan, the Director of Happy New Year, says that it’s not the big stars in her films that make them hits. “Happy New Year is ‘genre bending’; also, my films offer twists to the formula. This makes my films more entertaining. All I really care for is to entertain my audiences,” says Farah.
Talking about the superhit Om Shanti Om, she adds, “Many films have been made on reincarnation, however, I added a retro look to the film in order to be different. Presenting my films with twists literally twists the minds of the people and entertains them,” she smiles and adds, “It is really difficult for a filmmaker to entertain the audiences. And at the same time we have to make films, which will appeal to people from America and elsewhere. A filmmaker’s job is tough as he or she needs to keep in mind the appealing formula for audiences from all over the world.”
She, however, does not discount star power in her films. “Yes! HNY will definitely make a buzz for itself because of the star value. However, we have cast Vivaan in the film so you cannot say I only work with big stars,” she adds.
About making films with a twist, she says, “HNY has a dance theme, but it is a proven fact that the group are amongst the worst dancers.”
“This competition is mixed with a heist. That is also a kind of a formula. Films with a romantic love story formula are made in a similar way as this ‘heist’ formula of mine. The impediment is how you actually go about it while making the film and add your own ideas efficiently. It works great then.”
About working with Shah Rukh Khan after seven years that have seen highs and lows between the two, Farah says, “Coming back after almost seven years…after Om Shanti Om with SRK, I feel ‘all that ends well’ proves to be all nice.”
Farah adds, “HNY has been an enlivening but a tiring experience. I will take a six-month holiday after the release of the film to be with my kids.”
