Visakhapatnam has to wait for Metro
The project will be commenced in Vijayawada first
Visakhapatnam: Vizagites will have to wait for sometime for the much-awaited Metro Rail in the wake of state government’s decision to take up the project in Vijayawada first.
Though the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation has started preparatory works about one year ago, the scenario changed after the bifurcation and consequent finalisation of place for capital city.
Six companies bid for consultancy after the GVMC called global tenders. But, the state government had recently appointed metro man E. Sridharan as consultant and the DMRC has been entrusted to prepare Detailed Project Report of the Vizag project and also to monitor the progress.
With the decision of state government to take up metro rail in Vijayawada, Vizag with 20 lakh people will have to wait for another 12-24 months. “Normally, second phase projects would be started after minimum completion of 70 per cent of the first phase project. The period may generally be 12-18 months depending on land acquisition, and other processes. Sometimes it may be delayed further,” said a senior official from the GVMC.
