Report lists 75 measures for reducing crimes against women
Hyderabad: The Telangana state government’s committee constituted to look into issues related to the safety and security of women and girls submitted a 60-page report to the government after a series of discussions with women from different sections of society. Seventy-five measures were listed and sent.
“We have submitted the report on Saturday after feedback from speaking to women from various sections of the society,” said Poonam Malakondaiah, chairperson of the committee.
A few key recommendations include setting up of a forensic science lab in Hyderabad, Karimnagar, Warangal, Nizamabad and Mahbubnagar, and improving the Hyderabad DNA lab. A timeline for the submission of a report in cases where a forensic report is required was also mentioned.
“The FSL report must come in 10 days, doctors’ report in three days, doctor’s short opinion in one day, potency test in three days, DNA test in 30 days and the chargesheet in 90 days. Women rakshaks, similar to the Delhi Police, should be started in the police commissionerates and district headquarters,” the report stated.
The report stressed on the funds to be provided annually to the police stations for awareness campaigns. The report also focused on women and girl child trafficking.
“TS ranks second with AP in the country for the supply of women and children for the purposes of prostitution and sex trafficking. About 20,000 women and children are sold every year from the region,” the report mentioned.
The report also called on the government to examine its excise policy as crimes against women are increasing due to liquor consumption.
“Belt shops should not be allowed and liquor shops must not be located near residential areas, schools, colleges, homes and hostels have to be reviewed immediately and shops need to be relocated. Enforcement should be delinked with excise department,” it said.
