Three labourers die as wall collapses

The police registered a case of negligence against building owner

Bengaluru: Three construction labourers died, while two others were critically injured after the compound wall of Deccan Industries in Bommasandra Industrial Area caved in on them on Saturday morning.

The police identified the deceased as Sameer (32), Panchu (30) and Shankar (25). The injured are Gopal and Chotu, who are in their early twenties. All of them were contract labourers and hailed from Kolkata. They were living in a rented house in Bommasandra.

The police registered a case of negligence against building owner Javed Ahmed and mason Shekhar, who had hired 30 labourers for the construction work. Six of them were building the compound when the 20-foot wall collapsed on them around 11 am. Sameer and Panchu were buried under the debris and died on the spot, while Shankar died on the way to hospital.

Hearing the victims' screams, other construction labourers rushed to their rescue and also alerted the police, who in turn informed the Fire Department and Emergency Services. "The wall was damp because of continuous rains over the last few days. The workers were giving finishing touches to the wall when it collapsed," a senior police officer said.

A team of policemen and Fire Department officials pulled out the two injured labourers and rushed them to a nearby hospital. It took nearly three hours for rescue workers to pull the two bodies out, the police said. A case has been registered in the Hebbagodi police station.
