After Supreme Court ruling, anxious students await fresh notification on medical college seats
Bengaluru: A day after the Supreme Court granted permission to medical colleges in the country which were earlier denied recognition by the the Medical Council of India (MCI), citing deficiencies in the facilities available in those colleges, hundreds of students appearing for the Common Entrance Test (CET),who missed a government medical seat by a whisker, are now on tenterhooks, awaiting fresh notification over filling up of available seats.
As per the cut-off ranking released by the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA), the cut-off rank for MBBS under the government quota is 1,431, but following the Supreme Court’s judgment, at least 100 additional MBBS seats are expected to be added to the CET seat matrix. “We are waiting for seats from Akash and BGS Global, Kengeri and increased intake in other medical colleges.
As per MCI rules, September 30 is the last date for the filling up of medical seats in all colleges. So everyone is anxious and tense. Those just 3 to 4 ranks below the cut-off are spending sleepless nights and are constantly calling the KEA office seeking an update on the Supreme Court ruling and expected seat matrix,” said an officer from the KEA.
A student who has a CET ranking above 1,500 and is seeking a seat under the General Merit category said, if he does not get a seat, he will try next year. "I did not apply for any other course. My only aim is pursuing MBBS. It is my child hood dream and I am just a few ranks away. I hope the state government will soon release the new seat matrix and ensure that every seat will be filled up in a very transparent way," he said.
Speaking to this Deccan Chronicle Raghu Holla, another student who was waiting at the KEA office premises. said that the government needs to act quickly based on the Supreme Court’s judgment.
"Medical Education Department officials are not giving any information on the number of seats to be added to the seat matrix based on the Supreme Court’s judgement. “As September 30 is the last date, it is a very tense time,”' he said. Medical Education Department officials informed us that they will release the seat matrix once they get the Supreme Court’s order and proposal from the colleges.
