Vijayawada cops fall behind in recovery of stolen items

In August 2014, around Rs 71 lakh worth of property was stolen and only 11 per cent recovered
Vijayawada: While there has been a spate of house break-ins in Vijayawada in the recent past, the city police is yet to recover property stolen earlier.
The value of the stolen property, mostly gold ornaments lifted during break-ins and chain snatchings this year, till August, was put at Rs 5,05,11,711. However, the cops managed to recover only Rs 1,99,91,708 (just about 39.58 per cent) so far and identified the gangs behind the theft of 47.65 per cent of the property.
As many as 244 cases of dacoity, robbery, break-ins (both during the day and night) were reported so far in the year and the police could solve only 25 cases, while 164 are under investigation. However, the property recovered this year, (August-end) was lower when compared to that of property recovered in the corresponding period in 2013 and 2012. Over 63 per cent of the stolen property was recovered in 2012 and 57 per cent in 2013, but this year, only 39 per cent (around Rs 3 crore) of stolen property has been recovered.
In August 2014, around Rs 71 lakh worth of property was stolen and only 11 per cent recovered.
Senior cops say that since many gangs follow similar modus operandi during break-ins, the police is finding it difficult to trace them. While, the experienced criminals take up house burglaries, inexperience thieves mostly resort to snatching chains.
Speaking to this newspaper, police commissioner A.B. Venkateswara Rao said that the CCS wing has been reorganised to nab criminals at the earliest. “Burglars and chain snatchers top our priority list,” he said.
Special teams to study the modus operandi of the gangs have been formed. On a positive note the number of all robberies came down to 244 while it was 387 last year.
