Kerala alcohol ban: CITU to discuss fate of bar workers

The need to bring all trade unions under a common platform was discussed

KOTTAYAM: CITU’s state general council meeting here on Saturday and Sunday will discuss the fate of employees of bar hotels in the state who are jobless after the closure of the bars.

Emerging trends on labour front, policies of the Narendra Modi government, threats faced by secularism and new labour laws in favour of employers will also be discussed, said CPM leader and Ettumanur MLA K. Suresh Kurup.

The need to bring all trade unions under a common platform was discussed at a seminar held at Changanassery on September 16 as a prelude to the state council meet.

It was inaugurated by INTUC state president K. Chandrasekaran. Representatives of other trade unions were also present on the occasion.

“The general council will discuss the labour issues in the state and at the national level. The need to protect the interest of the labourers in the context of the liberalisation policies of the Narendra Modi government at the centre and the challenges faced by secularism will be discussed,” Mr Suresh Kurup added.

Heralding the meeting, a huge rally was held in the town on Friday evening in which thousands of workers under the 12 area committees in the district participated.

CITUC national president A.K. Padmanabhan will inaugurate the council meeting at the CSI retreat centre here at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
