Elderly couple Marudachalam.K, 92 and his wife Marudathal.M, 87 turned up to vote braving their old age on Thursday.
Coimbatore: Youth did not turn up in large numbers at the polling booths, but the elderly voters marked their presence with enthusiasm in one of the most sedate mayoral polls. Braving their old age, Marudachalam, 92, and his wife, Marudathal, 87, exercised their franchise at a school in Sowripalayam.
"Ever since we got married some 70 years ago, we both vote without fail in all elections. I wish for a mayor who would work for the good of the people and not towards his self-interest," he said. Despite his withering age, Marudachalam would buy curry leaves as early as 4 am from Ukkadam market and sell it in households and shops in his locality. "I earn my living and am not dependent on anyone," said Marudachalam.
Two young voters, L. Priya and P. Prem Kumar, both college students who are voting for the first time in mayoral elections, said the new mayor should focus on developing the infrastructure of the
city.
