Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur wants Tamil Nadu to show more interest in setting up food parks
It is disappointing that there have been nil applications from the state for food parks
Chennai: Tamil Nadu, with its huge potential in the food processing sector, should come forward to avail of many of the Central government’s schemes, said Union minister for food processing Harsimrat Kaur Badal.
With the ministry sanctioning a subsidy of about Rs 50 crore for the establishment of mega food parks, Ms Badal said, “After Andhra Pradesh, I feel there is huge potential for TN in the food processing sector. It is disappointing that there have been nil applications from the state for food parks.”
It was later clarified the food ministry had received a few applications, but was expecting more from the state. The minister was speaking at the inauguration of a national enclave on the food processing sector, organised by the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce, here on Thursday.
Stressing the focus given to the food processing sector, the minister referred to the PM’s move to delink food processing from the agriculture ministry and the allocation of Rs 2,000 crore by Finance Minister in the Union Budget.
