Recover education loans, bankers tell Kerala government.
Thiruvananthapuram: The State-Level Bankers Committee has urged the state government not to extend the moratorium on education loans.
A review meeting of the SLBC held here on Thursday also asked the government to take steps to recover the money from defaulters of education loans. This was based on the recommendations of the steering committee of the SLBC. They pointed out that many were not paying back the money even after they got employment.
The meeting pointed out that commercial banks in the state have disbursed Rs 17,620 crore to the priority sector during the first three months of this financial year.
The amount came to 19 per cent of the total disbursement target of Rs 93,124 crore for priority sector for the year. Of this, Rs 9,482 crore was for agriculture sector, Rs 3,493 crore for secondary sector and Rs 4,645 crore for the tertiary sector.
At the end of June, the total deposits in banks in the state touched Rs 283,928 crore, including Rs 94,097 crore as NRI deposit. The SLBC also found that the total advances as on June were Rs 192,561 crore, including Rs 209,6 38 crore in approved securities/ debentures. The total advances to priority sector as in June 2014 touched Rs 115,246 crore.
