Purified water for all in Khammam
Khammam: The officials of rural water supply department (RWS) have commenced a survey for the prestigious Telangana government’s project aiming to provide purified water to all the habitations in the district. As per the programme, safe water would be supplied to the villages till 2035 through specially built pipelines by getting water from Krishna and Godavari rivers.
The present drinking water schemes are unable to supply safe water to the 26 lakh district population. Water everywhere is increasingly being contaminated from numerous sources and this, especially in potable (drinking) water is a major concern due to the associated health hazards. The most common contaminants are suspended matter, mud, silt, algae, bacteria and other pathogens.
As per one survey, two lakh people in 742 habitations in the district are suffering from water-borne diseases every year. The aim of the mega project is to overcome all these health hazards.
Ranging from survey to maintenance, the entire work will be done under the supervision of RWS department. The officials will identify suitable places to lay pipelines in the district. As part of the survey, the details of present drinking water schemes, population, capacity of the overhead tanks, requirement of new overhead tanks, how far the present pipelines can be useful for the project and information of water sources in the village will be collected by the officials. The government involved all the employees in RWS for the survey. One or two major water sources in the district will be identified in the survey to be made part of the water grid project.
An official involved in the survey said, “Final shape of the project will come out after completion of the survey. The experts evolved the project after taking the information in the survey reports. The idea is to use the existing pipelines to the maximum extent.” He said that the government would shape the project to be cost-effective and some money for the maintenance of the project will be collected from industrialists by supplying water to the industries.
