Pakistan spiritual healer kills follower after promising 2nd life
The spiritual leader had gained popularity among the villagers
Islamabad: A fake Pakistani faith healer has been arrested for allegedly killing his follower after assuring him a second life through miracle.
According to Saddar police spokesman, Muhammad Sabir, a pir of village Mubarakabad in Bahawalnagar was arrested on Wednesday from Multan. The pir had gained popularity among the villagers over the last five years for his ability to perform 'miracles'.
Earlier this week, the pir claimed that he could bring back to life a dead man if the person willing to volunteer for dying was married and had children, the Express Tribune reported. Muhammad Niaz (40), a daily wage worker and father of six children, volunteered for the miracle.
On Wednesday, Niaz was placed on a table in a square and his hands and legs were bound. Sabir then sliced his throat as people looked on. Meanwhile, an anonymous caller informed the police about 'the miracle' but by the time police reached at the spot, Niaz had died.
Witnesses said Sabir uttered some words to bring him back to life, but when he realised his 'miracle' had failed, he tried to flee. He was detained by the villagers and handed over to the police.
Villagers told police that the pir also used to sacrifice animals and birds and sprinkle their blood on his followers to save them from black magic. A FIR against the cleric has been lodged in Multan's Saddar police station.
The victim's family, however, have no regrets for the death of Niaz. Samina, the victim's sister told The Express Tribune, that her brother had sacrificed himself for the spiritual leader. "Why should I mourn when I know that my brother is in heaven?" she said. She said her brother had volunteered for the miracle and that the pir should not have been arrested.
