Hyderabad: A centre of excellence for promotion and replication of best practices in women‘s empowerment through Self Help Groups will be set up by the Telangana state government.
Speaking at the Indian Ocean Rim Association Women Empowerment and Poverty Alleviation workshop on Sunday, IT minister K.T. Rama Rao spoke in depth about the Telangana Rural Inclusive Growth Project.
He said that the recent household survey also targeted poor women for proper implementation of government programmes for them. Talking about the massive social mobilisation effort in the state, he said that 4.74 million rural poor women had been organised into 4.17 lakh SHGs.
“To provide government services with access to ownership at their doorstep along with other financial services, ‘One Stop Service Centers’ at the gram panchayat level have been set up to help rural people and also to bring in transparency and accountability,” said Mr Rao said.
The Telangana Rural Inclusive Growth Project is a World Bank funded project with an outlay of $107 million for improving value chain through producers’ organisations in agriculture, allied sectors and non-farm sectors to create additional livelihoods for the rural poor.
Talking about Stree Nidhi (a credit cooperative society), Mr Rao said that it was a unique model of credit delivery using the technology platform to provide timely and affordable credit to SHG members that disbursed $70 million worth loans in the financial year 2013-14. He projected a credit flow of $600 million for the year 2014-15.
He also mentioned that a total of 4,171 cases related to domestic violence and other issues had been resolved of the 7,381 cases registered. As part of the ongoing three-day IORA workshop, delegates from IORA member countries will visit SHG federations at village, mandal and district levels in Mahbubnagar, Medak and Nalgonda districts of TS and learn about the transformations brought about by the project.
