Hyderabad Liberation Day celebrations turn into a row

Hyderabad: Several secular organisations from Telangana state have decided to launch a legal battle against the Karnataka and Maharashtra state governments for officially celebrating September 17 as Hyderabad Liberation Day since 2001.
The organisations, while articulating that September 17 has no significance or relevance with the merger of the Hyderabad state into the Indian Union, have also decided to put pressure on the Centre for removal of the alleged distorted content in the school books of Marathwada region in Maharashtra.
Hyderabad Deccan Democratic Alliance, Telangana Democratic and Secular Alliance and Tameer-e-Millat organisations have claimed that they have documented proof that the history of the Deccan, between the years of 1947 and ’52, has been completely distorted for ulterior motives.
According to Dr Chiranjeevi Kolluri, on September 12, 1948, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel had ordered the Army to march towards Hyderabad to merge the princely state with the Indian Union and on the next day the Army had marched from all four directions into Hyderabad. The Army entered Zaheerabad, Bhongir and other areas on September 17 and it entered Hyderabad on September 18 without any resistance. He said that it was the Nizam VII who had announced on November 24, 1949, that Hyderabad state would adopt the Indian Constitution and had kept his word on January 27, 1950. On that day the Nizam was appointed as Rajpramukh (Governor).
He added that the Supreme Court on December 24, 1949, had ruled in the case of Narasimha Reddy that the Hyderabad Province did not come under the purview of the Indian Union.
Despite a request from Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, the Nizam had declined to continue as the Governor of the newly formed state of Andhra Pradesh on November 1, 1956, as he was not happy with the way the state was trifurcated and Telangana was forcibly merged with AP, he added.
M.A. Raheem Qureshi of Tameer-e-Millat said that the above facts had completely been distorted and the Nizam had been projected as a dictator and anti people. He said, “We have decided to place all the relevant documents before the Centre to take steps to prevent Maharashtra and Karnataka governments to celebrate September 17 as Liberation Day. We have also decided to put pressure on the Centre to make public the Pandit Sundaralal Commission report on the Police Action immediately. We will also move the Apex Court for justice in this case.”
