Mother gives birth to a baby girl on Chennai Central platform

After baby was delivered, the doctor clamped the cord, administered vitamin K injection

Chennai: A pregnant young woman who was about to board a train to Rajasthan on Monday evening, went into labour at the Chennai central railway platform and delivered a healthy baby girl.

With only a week left for the expected day of delivery of their seventh child, Kabadia, a balloon seller in Chennai and his wife Uchap Bai and two of their children landed at Central to board the train to native Kota in Rajasthan for delivery. But, the 28-year-old woman began to experience contractions and developed sudden labour pain at about 6.50 pm.

A woman RPF constable who saw the woman’s struggle called the free emergency centre of SRM Institutes of Medical Science (SIMS) and a medical team rushed to the place and minutes later the woman delivered her baby on the platform.

Dr Pragadeesh who headed the team, said the woman was sitting near the luggage section when she developed labour pain. “A coolie who passed by, saw the woman and gave his bed sheet to cover her during the delivery.

Both the coolie and the woman RPF constable shielded the mother from public view,” said nurse. Arumugam adding that the mother and the newborn are doing well. “When the team went to see her, she was in the third stage of labour. After the baby was delivered, the doctor clamped the cord, administered vitamin K injection and transferred both to the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Egmore,” said Dr. Balu.

“We do not know anyone here, so we thought we would go to our native place for delivery. We will now go to Kota on Thursday evening with the newborn”, said Kabadia in Hindi. Monday’s baby is the couple’s fourth girl.
