India-China talks today; Xi Jinping gets red carpet in Gujarat

The 3 signed MoUs include making Guangzhou city in China and Ahmedabad sister cities

New Delhi: Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday began his three-day visit to India from Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, after which the two nations signed three Gujarat-specific pacts in Ahmedabad. The three MoUs were signed in the presence of Mr Modi and Mr Xi after the Chinese leader and his wife, Peng Liyuan, were welcomed by the PM at the entrance of Hyatt Hotel. Mr Modi presented bouquets to the couple.

The MoUs include making Guangzhou city in China and Ahmedabad sister cities, setting up of industrial parks in this state and an agreement between Guangdong province and Gujarat for the development of cultural and social ties between the two provinces.

Mr Modi and Mr Xi, who had a brief one-on-one meet, will hold extensive talks in New Delhi on Thursday, and the two sides are expected to sign a number of pacts that will provide for Chinese investments in a range of areas, including railways and industrial parks. The trip has been largely described as a visit to focus on economic and trade issues, President Xi is expected to announce large-scale inve-stments rivalling Japan’s $35 billion pledge.
