24 Khammam bridges dilapidated
At least Rs 300 crore is required to rebuild, repair or construct new bridges
Khammam: As many as 24 of the bridges and culverts in different areas of the district are in such a dilapidated state that they can collapse any moment.
A report pertaining to the dilapidated bridges has been sent by the R&B department to the state government. While some of these bridges were built by the Nizam, others were built post-Independence.
Heavy vehicles, transporting granite to the Kakinada port from the district are blamed for the bad shape of these bridges.
At least Rs 300 crore is required to rebuild, repair or construct new bridges and widen the roads in the district.
R&B sources say that many of these bridges have developed cracks in the pillars. An official said that some of the bridges built in the 1980s and 1990s eighties and nineties were also on the list of dilapidated ones. “Structural failure has caused the cracks. Besides, excessive deformations and frequent flooding of rivulets is another reason for it,” the official said.
Officials hope the Telangana government will take up the repairs on these bridges as part of its plans to provide road connectivity to all remote hamlets to check the spread of Maoist activities.
