Octogenarian pushed out of train in Chennai by railway guard
Chennai: An 82-year-old man on Monday suffered hip injuries after a railway guard pushed him out of a train. The incident happened at Tindivanam railway station and the passenger was travelling on the Cholan express. The guard allegedly pushed S. Kalimuthu, a retired railway employee, from the stationary train as the aged man was travelling in an empty compartment, reserved for physically challenged people.
“Despite a bleeding hip injury, my father, a retired railway motorman from Tiruchy, insisted that we should continue travelling in the train without halting it and causing inconvenience to other passengers,” R. Alli, an office superintendent working at the Chennai city police commissioner’s office told Deccan Chronicle on Wednesday.
She was travelling in the ladies’ compartment of the same train. She and her father were travelling from Villupuram to Tambaram. The other passengers were ready to stop the train till an ambulance arrived. However, he insisted that he would take the ambulance from Tambaram railway station, and, accordingly, he was admitted to the Rajiv Gandhi GGH on Monday evening.
“I tried telling the guard that I would change the compartment at the next station. But he started throwing my bags out on to the platform before dragging me out of the compartment by the collar and finally pushing me on to the platform. I suffered a hip injury on my left side. The doctors here said they would decide on surgery on Thursday,” Kalimuthu told Deccan Chronicle from his hospital bed.
Alli had to run from pillar to post to register a complaint. On Monday, the Tindivanam railway police advised Alli to lodge a complaint with the Tambaram police.
“On Monday evening, we were busy calling the ambulance and sending father to hospital. But on Tuesday morning, when we tried to lodge a compliant with the Tambaram railway police, they said we should approach the Chengalpet or Tindivanam railway police. The Chengalpet railway police said we should register the complaint either at Tindivanam or Tambaram. Only on Wednesday evening, the Chengalpet railway police said they would take the complaint based on information from the GH,” Alli said.
Kalimuthu, a former railway employee had not seen the guard earlier. But he would be able to identify him.
