Step out of the comfort zone of sadness

Physical and emotional pain is inevitable in life, but suffering is optional

Why do we suffer? Are we the victims of situations? Or do we have a choice?

“Pain is a relatively objective, physical phenomenon; suffering is our psychological resistance to what happens. Events may create physical pain, but they do not in themselves create suffering. Resistance creates suffering. Stress happens when mind resists what is… the only problem in your life is your mind’s resistance to life as it unfolds,” says American author Dan Millman.

Both physical and emotional pain is inevitable to our existence, but suffering is optional. Suffering is more of a choice than pain. Suffering can be a result of having expectations and judgments on how things should be. We can either focus on what we have and remain in gratitude or remain in a space of resistance with a need to control the outcome of everything. Much of our discontent and dissatisfaction comes from the latter. A lot of us live burdened with past traumas, burying ourselves in the comfort zone of sadness. We cling on to situations which no longer serve a higher purpose.

Though this might seem like an easier option than to take a leap into the unknown, we need to understand that if we were to continue to do the things that have resulted in making us unhappy, how will we ever be happy?

Life would become much easier if we would instead choose to change… letting go and going with the flow is not the end of the world, it is the beginning of a new you. By resisting change and trying to control, we stop the universal abundance from moving freely into our lives. By adapting change and accepting situations we align ourselves with the universe. To quote Lao Tzu, “If you correct your mind, the rest of your life will fall into place.”

When you let go, you become a part of the master plan. What the Divine has for you may be much grander than what you are trying to control. When you let go, you receive what you need. As Chinese philosopher Chuang Tzu shared, “Flow with whatever is happening and let your mind be free. Stay centered by accepting whatever you are doing. This is the ultimate.” Life is like a river… flow with it, change is the only permanent thing in our lives. Life at times may become muddy or messy, overwhelming or barren; don’t despair… you can bring in change. Respond to your life’s situations and don’t react to them. Everything does not have to be perfect, but your actions can remain impeccable.
