Truck chokes Hyderabad’s artery

Traffic locked for hours; social media keeps it from getting worse
Hyderabad: The arterial Sardar Patel Road was jammed for hours in the early hours of Tuesday after a lorry laden with cement bags slammed into the median on the Begumpet flyover. Traffic was diverted to MG Road, Minister Road and Necklace Road, causing heavy traffic on those busy roads as well. Traffic began moving only by about 12 noon.
Social media came in useful to prevent a worse mess, with traffic police and vehiclists alerting others about the jam and warning them to take other routes.
“The accident occurred at around 4 am and two cranes were brought to move the lorry. One of the cranes broke down due to the load. Then we had to remove the cement bags from the lorry after which could move it. This took three to four hours,” said Sudheer Babu, DCP Traffic.
Punjagutta inspector S. Mohan said they could move the lorry with the help of cranes provided by Hyderabad Metro Rail.
“A case will be booked under the MV Act against the driver and the court will decide the punishment and penalty after more investigation,” the DCP added.
Police posted alerts on the traffic situation on FM radio channels and social networking sites like Facebook. Commuters who were stuck in the jam updated the status on Twitter. “I stay in Trimulgherry and I had to reach my office in Hi-tech City by about 11 am but by the time I went, it was about 12:30,” said K. Bhargav, a techie.
Due to the accident and traffic diversions other roads like Necklace Road, Lower Tank bund; Minister Road also witnessed slow traffic movement.
"When I got stuck near Paradise I did not understand what happened. Once I got to know of the accident, I quickly informed my friends and relatives texting them not to take this route. Fortunately today was my off day and had nothing important to do. So I decided to change my route", said Zafar Ali a private employee.
