Deserters to face heat

Jammu-Srinagar NH reopened; J&K to get more relief

New Delhi: Concerned over the severe criticism over the lack of response during the devastating floods that ravaged the Kashmir Valley, the state government will initiate action against those officers, both from the administration and the police, who deserted their duty and tried to move out of the area during the tragedy

Sources said once normalcy is restored in the flood affected regions the state government will launch a probe into the role of it own officers during the tragedy.

“Stringent disciplinary action will be taken against those who des-erted the state during such a major tragedy. Had it not been for the massive assistance from the Central government things would have been much worse,” an official said.

Meanwhile, the Centre is working on an additional package for the state even though a grant of '1,000 crore has already been announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Sources said various ministries were compiling the inputs on the assistance required based of the feedback from their teams in the Valley. The issue is expected to be taken up by the Cabinet shortly following which the Centre will announce a bigger package, officials added.

In a major relief, the Jammu-Srinagar Nati-onal Highway reopened for traffic on Tuesday after remaining closed for 13 days, a development that will give a boost to relief efforts in the flood-ravaged Kas-hmir Valley. Water has receded to a large extent in Jhelum river and the main flood canal.
