Chennai metro stations to be ready by October
Concrete boxes will make way for swanky AC stations
Chennai: Watch out for brand new landmarks lining along 100 ft road when you ride from Kathipara to Koyambedu in a month from now.
The skyline of that stretch of the road is sure to change by then. And it will be no sprawling shopping mall or luxury hotel that might tempt you to make a pit stop, but something even big, something you have been raving about for a while now. Yes! It is the city’s maiden metro rail, precisely, its stations. The massive “concrete boxes” will make way for swanky air-conditioned rail stations by mid-October.
CMRL (Chennai Metro Rail Limited) officials are confident that seven stations from Koyambedu to Alandur (Azhar Khana) would be finished by then. A highly-placed CMRL official requesting anonymity told Deccan Chronicle that all but a couple of skywalks at Koyambedu and Ashok Pillar stations would be
completed then.
Erection of lifts and escalators among other infrastructure required for easing traveller’s mobility inside the station are almost ready. Surprised? Hold you breath. It does not stop there. Work is apace to make Chennaiites swipe the smart card even on day 1 of the commercial metro rail run. “The smart cards have arrived. Works are apace to make them operational for the launch of the commercial run,” the officer said.
Also, you can expect little interface with metro officials during the commercial run. CMRL has planned to install automatic ticket vending machines in all the seven stations. CMRL staff would also be available to assist travellers operate the vending machines for a while.
Likewise, a few counters would be opened to assist travellers in the stations.
