Strive for excellence: Dr Hedge

Padma Bhushan awardee addresses ASCI graduates
Hyderabad: Students must strive for excellence to serve the society better, stated former Vice-Chancellor of Manipal University and Padma Bhushan awardee Dr B.M. Hegde. Speaking at the convocation ceremony of the 2012-2014 batch of students of the Administrative Staff College, Dr Hegde said, “The students should not compete and compare with others, but must compete with their own selves. Excellence is achieved when we do things better than yesterday and improve to do better the day after.”
“According to Ayurveda,” said Dr Hegde, “If we eat well, sleep well and do not hate anybody, we cannot fall ill.” He felt that modern medicine compels people to take unnecessary medication for ailments that do not require any. To prove his point he cited the example of Mahatma Gandhi, whose blood pressure was always 200/130, though he never took take any medicines.
“Great institutions like Harvard and Stanford are supported by alumni who donate funds and work for the development of the institution. The alumni of ASCI must do the same,” he said.
ASCI director Dr S.K. Rao, former NIMS director Professor K. Subba Rao and faculty of ASCI, including Anshu Bhargava and Dr Rama Krishna, were also present.
