Maoist held for attack on former Andhra Pradesh CM Janardhan Reddy
Nellore: Police produced a dreaded Maoist leader, Vattigunta Venkateswar Reddy, alias Deepak, before magistrate Krishnakumari, at Kota town, 75 km from Nellore, on Sunday.
He is an accused in the Maoist attack on the former CM N. Janardhan Reddy, and his wife Rajyalakshmi, at Vidya Nagar, in Kota mandal on September 7, 2007.
A team of cops from Nellore went to Alipore Central Jail, in Kolkata, where Deepak had been languishing since 2010, and brought him to Chennai by flight and thereafter to Kota by road amid tight security on Sunday.
Police will file a memo before the magistrate to seek his custody for questioning on Monday. He was sent to Nellore Central Prison as per the directions of the magistrate on Sunday evening.
It may be recalled that Janardhan Reddy and his wife escaped unhurt in the landmine blast, but a car driver, Mallikarjuna Reddy, a politician-turned- contractor, B. Nagarjuna Reddy, and a follower of NJR, Payasam Dasaiah, of Venkatagiri constituency, were killed on the spot.
