Chennai: Having come to know in the course of investigations of the links of ISI spies Sakir Hussian and Arun Selvarajan to the glamour world, NIA investigators are now probing deeper to know if any key officials manning vital installations were honey-trapped by them.
“Honey-trapping has been one of the oldest tricks in the espionage world. Both Sakir Hussain and Arun had links with the glamour world.
As an event manager, Arun knew many attractive girls. And we found pictures of Sakir posing with a leading star of Malayalam cinema,” a NIA officer said. But he declined to elaborate.
The Sri Lankan Tamil, Arun Selvarajan, 28, a suspected former member of the LTTE, was running a profitable event management firm in Nungambakkam when he was arrested last week by the NIA team. The ‘Q’ branch of the Tamil Nadu police picked up Sakir, also a Sri Lankan Tamil, on April 29. Both were found to be in possession of documents, illustrations, sketches and photographs of vital installations and buildings, such as the nuclear establishment in Kalpakkam, nuclear submarine facility in Vizag, harbors in Chennai and Ennore, NSG hub at Vandalur, DGP office and the High Court complex.
NIA sources said Sakir had some foreign missions in Chennai and Bengaluru too on his target list. Both the suspects were operating throughout south India, they said.
”Apart from their links with the glamour world, the NIA team is expected to probe deep into all of Arun’s links. We will certainly take firm action if some officials in these sensitive areas compromised and gave away information. Arun was certainly trying his best to gain access to OTA, NSG hub and Coast Guard offices in Chennai”, another NIA source said.
Following Arun’s arrest, central security agencies have also stepped up surveillance of vital installations, including defence establishments and foreign missions in south India.
