Uproar over district split

Science or numerology? Opposition wants explanation

Hyderabad: Telangana state government’s plan to create 14 new districts by reorganising existing 10 districts has kicked up a political row. Questions are being raised over the basis for creation of new districts, whether any scientific study has been conducted or whether it is a ‘politically motivated’ decision. As per the proposals two new districts have been planned in Mahbubnagar district, namely, Nagar Kurnool and Wanaparthy. In Medak districts, two new districts, Siddipet and Sanga Reddy have been proposed.

While in Adilabad, Khammam, Nalgonda and Karimnagar districts, only one new district each, namely Mancherial, Kothagudem, Suryapet and Jagitial were proposed, in Ranga Reddy two new districts, Vikarabad and Ibrahimpatnam and in Warangal, two new districts, Bhoopaalapally, Jangoan were planned. It was proposed to include Kamareddy division in Nizamabad district in new Siddipet district.

Senior Congress leader Shabbir Ali said, “This is being done to accord more significance to Harish Rao by making his constituency as district. The geographical location does not suit merger of Kamareddy with Siddipet.” TD MLA A. Revanth Reddy too protested saying, “The creation of new districts should be based on scientific study and not to suit KCR’s lucky number of 6, while the total districts in TS are being increased to 24 to suit his horoscope.”
