ISI spy used tech selectively
The NIA believes that there could be at least four or five persons working in Tamil Nadu
Chennai: NIA sleuths, who arrested Arun Selvarajan, a suspected ISI spy of Sri Lankan origin, had picked up a digital file, carrying teleconversations between him and many others, that he had himself recorded.“It looks like he had a habit of recording conversations with people whom he considered important,” NIA sources said, adding that this could serve as good evidence against him. Several such conversations were recovered from his mobile phones and laptop.
Sources said he had been using new Internet tools, like Viber and Skype, for communication with his contacts. He avoided exchanging information through email, neither sending mails nor receiving them. Instead, in order to stay away from the scanners of intelligence agencies, Arun and his Pakistani handlers shared a common mail in which Arun would save the data in the ‘drafts’ folder which would be accessed by his Pakistani handler who would download it upon intimation from Arun.
To know more about his modus operandi, the NIA is planning to seek 10 days’ custody for questioning. “A number of state and Central security agencies had shown ‘keen interest’ in him,” sources said.
The NIA also believes that there could be at least four or five persons working as part of the spy network in Tamil Nadu. The spokesperson said if they looked into Arun’s bank account in detail, they could perhaps get an idea about the funding pattern and existence of other spy modules to whom he was remitting money through his Moradabad bank account. The Central and state Intelligence agencies had also expressed their eagerness to interrogate the terror suspect.
