Hospitals on the verge of collapse
Condition of municipal corporation’s maternity hospital causing jitters
Nellore: The condition of a maternity hospital building located in thickly populated Stonehousepeta area of Nellore city has been causing jitters to those working in the hospital as well to patients coming to the hospital. The building constructed, few decades ago presented a pathetic picture and is on the verge of collapse.
Not only the building, the hospital run by the Nellore Municipal Corporation (NMC) lacks medicines and the doctors posted to the hospital never bother to attend to duty on daily basis, according to a patient Ramanamma.
She said that there are no toilets or drinking water facility in the hospital. Except an ayah and a watchman, no one was present in the hospital on Friday morning. The ayah S. Munemma attributed the condition of the building to termites. She said that the toilet and bathroom are ready to give up because of the damage done by termites.
Incidentally, the state of a nearby Ayurveda dispensary, which is also run by Nellore Municipal Corporation, is no better than the maternity hospital. Medical officer of the dispensary, Dr Srinivasulu, said that they are scared over working in the building.
He said that they have sent several representations to the NMC to renovate the building but there was no response.
Meanwhile, former Nellore legislator M. Sreedharkrishna Reddy and Telugu Desam spokesperson and 8th division corporator, Dr Z. Siva Prasad, were taken aback when they inspected the hospital and dispensary on Friday.
They directed the health officer, Dr Ramana, to take action against those absent from the duties. They have also promised to obtain sanction from the government to construct new buildings.
