Vellore: What happens if a wedding is performed between a male-donkey and female-donkey? The answer is very simple - rain. This is a popular belief in many parts of the country, particularly in Tamil Nadu’s Vellore district.
With Friday being an auspicious day, several villagers around Ambur planned to organise one such marriage at a public place in Ambur. A priest from their own village solemnised the wedding between two donkeys.
The male and female donkeys were decorated with kumkum on their foreheads and turmeric powder water sprayed on their bodies. Their hooves were also decorated with kumkum and turmeric, and towels draped on the animals.
The animals were brought to a small platform near a small temple in Ambur. They were brought in a small procession with two men playing nadhaswaram followed by percussion instrument tavil. Villagers were divided into two groups, representing the groom’s and bride’s family.
When the priest started chanting mantras, a person from the bridegroom’s group took a more than a foot-long yellow thread and tied it around the she donkey. Witnesses of the marriage clapped their hands in glee. Only one thing was missing – lunch for those who attended the wedding.
