Tamil Nadu: Acid thrown on 2 college girls, identity of culprit unknown

NCRB records state over 200 cases of acid attacks reported between 2010 and 2012

Chennai: Two girls in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu have been hospitalised after a man threw acid on them outside their college on Friday afternoon.

The two girls were walking out of their college, Madurai Kamraj University, after an exam, when the incident took place in Thirumangalam.

According to reports, a witness said that the man was not known to the victims and the incident happened suddenly.

A senior police officer said that the motive for the attack, or the identity of the man is not known is not known yet, a police officer said.

Rising number of acid attacks in India led the Supreme Court to issue guidelines last year to restrict its sale.

There have been over 200 reported cases of such attacks on women between 2010 and 2012, according to the National Crime Records Bureau.
