Osmania University Campus blockades hit RTC passengers
More than 150 buses were damaged during the struggle for statehood
Hyderabad: There is a sense of déja vu at the Osmania University as the campus is on boil again. The Telangana State’s decision of regularisation of the contract employees has not gone down well with the students and this is leading to daily road blockades, protests, dharnas and lathi charges by the police.
The worst affected are the RTC buses that pass through the campus and their passengers. Most of the passengers are forced to endure long detours as there is a road blockade till late in afternoon at least thrice a week.
Eight bus routes pass through the OU campus. As many as 57 buses ply on these routes and together make 625 trips in a day. Drivers and RTC officials complain of huge losses caused by the detours.
“Whenever there is a blockade at the NCC Gate or at the engineering college, we have to make a detour behind the Manikeshwaram Road to reach Ramnagargundu, then come to Vidyanagar and subsequently Jamai Osmania. Instead of a straight road to reach Tarnaka from Shivam Road, we have to go all the way round. On the way back, if there is a barricade near the OU Gate, we have to go all the way from Tarnaka, to Habsiguda, to Street No. 8 Habsiguda, to Ramanthapur, to No. 6 Amberpet bus-stop and then reach Nallakunta, which is both fuel and time consuming,” said a bus driver.
Ten buses of 3H, two buses of 3D, 23 buses of 3 HN, one bus of 3M, four buses of 3N, one bus each of 3Y, ten buses of 6H, one bus of 3H/242 and 107 V/R routes pass through the campus. More than 150 buses were damaged and burnt during the struggle for a separate statehood inside the OU campus.
