Maharashtra’s sex workers raise funds for J-K flood victims

Women sex workers of Ahmednagar have contributed to help people in every catastrophe

Ahmednagar: Commercial sex workers of Ahmednagar district in Maharashtra have raised funds to help flood-hit victims of Jammu & Kashmir.

The workers have contributed Rs 10,321 to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund and handed over the contribution to resident deputy collector Ahmednagar Rajendrakumar Patil on Friday, trustee of NGO Snehalaya, Suman Tribhuvan, told PTI.

Women sex workers of Ahmednagar have contributed to help people in every catastrophe for the last 25 years, which includes 1993 serial blasts in Mumbai, 2001 Gujarat earthquake, Kargil war, for tsunami victims, drought in Maharashtra and Uttarakhand landslide calamity last year, Suman said.

"Women here fight for their rights but they are equally responsible towards their duties and each time whenever there has been a disaster, they have contributed. Last year, they had raised Rs 1 lakh for Uttarakhand victims," she added.

As many as 200 workers have raised the money by contributing from their pay.
