Singapore wants to build Andhra Pradesh capital
It would set a model for government-to-government co-operation
NEW DELHI: With Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu promising to build the new capital city on the lines of Singapore, the Singapore government on Wednesday suggested “Government to Government” model of co-operation in constructing the new city, which is proposed for inclusion in the Smart Cities project.
The Singapore government also evinced interest in co-operating with India in building 100 smart cities across the country during a meeting Emeritus senior minister and former prime minister Goh Chok Tong had with urban development minister M. Venkaiah Naidu here.
The leaders also held extensive discussion on exploring possible areas of co-operation between the two countries in urban development sector. During the meeting, sources said, Mr Goh said Singapore is keen in the development of new capital of Andhra Pradesh , which could be a model for replication and this could be taken up in ‘Government- to- Government’ co-operation mode including the governments of India, Andhra Pradesh and Singapore.
Already, AP Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has promised to build the new city on the lines of Singapore and has also invited investors from all South East Asian countries to invest in the new capital city.
Mr Venkaiah Naidu told the Singaporean delegation that the Andhra Pradesh government is keen to develop the new capital as a smart city. Mr Naidu told the visiting delegation that the suggestion of Singapore would be considered further and directed urban development secretary Shankar Aggrawal to hold further talks with all the concerned.
Acknowledging that Singapore has one of the finest urban service delivery systems, Mr Venkaiah Naidu appreciated their interest in co-operating with India in its efforts to convert rapid urbanisation into economic growth.
