Sea port plan for each district in Andhra Pradesh runs into troubled waters
While the AP government wants to develop ports in each district, the existing ones have raised serious viability
Hyderabad: The much-hyped 14 sea-ports plan of AP government has been hit by ‘exclusive zone’ hurdle of existing ports. While the AP government wants to develop ports in each district, the existing ones like Krishnapatnam and Gangavaram have raised serious viability concerns stating that they are granted exclusive zones and the government’s move to set up new ports will be a huge concern.
For instance Krishnapatnam port claims that as per the concession agreement signed by the AP government, it has 130-km of exclusive zone along the coast and it strongly objected to Ramayapatnam ports. Likewise Gangavaram port has 100 km of exclusive zone.
Experts say that traffic studies, revenue implication have to be studied and it is not possible to set up 14 ports in the current scenario. Anil Yendluri, director and CEO of Krishnapatnam Port Company Limited, said, “I hope expert teams will consider all commercial, legal concerns of the existing ports.”
