NIA arrests Sri Lankan ‘spy’

Selvarajan is suspected to have collected information about defence installations in the south

Hyderabad: National Investigation Agency officials from Hyderabad on Wednesday arrested a Sri Lankan national in connection with the sensational Hamid Ansari spy case of Tamil Nadu.

NIA officials said the suspect, Arun Selvarajan, also possesses an Indian passport. Ansari was arrested from Tiruchy in what was the first-ever spy case to be taken up by the NIA from Tamil Nadu.

NIA senior officials said Selvarajan was spying on Indian establishments at the behest of Pakistan. “He was passing on classified information about the nation using the Internet. He had collected the information while he was conducting some events,” said the official.

Selvarajan is suspected to have collected information about defence installations in the south.

The NIA officials, who seized incriminating evidence, said he was earlier involved in criminal cases in Sri Lanka and the enforcement agencies had issued a look-out notice for him.

The Ansari spy case was initially probed by the CB-CID of Tamil Nadu and NIA took over the probe in May 2013.
