Poitin is a potent beverage
Poitín is a traditional Irish distilled beverage
Hyderabad: If you thought absinthe was the most potent of spirits, then you’re in for a shocker. Poitín is a traditional Irish distilled beverage (40%-90% ABV, yes you read right). It was traditionally distilled in a small pot still and the term is a diminutive of the Irish word pota, meaning, “pot”. It is traditionally distilled from malted barley, grain, treacle, sugar beet, potatoes or whey.
The production of poitin was outlawed in 1661, and remained illegal until the late 1990s. Today, two Irish brands Knockeen Hills and Bunratty, are officially licenced to produce poitín. While it should not be drunk neat due to its high alcoholic strength, the product is beginning to enjoy a reputation as a brilliant spirits base for cocktails. It can be mixed to good effect with most of the normal mixers associated with vodka.
Densely fruity with citrusy notes occasionally, poitin has a strong aroma. Warming and peppery in taste, the initial shock subsides and a balanced fruitiness shows through. With water the middle taste is longer and reveals more character.
