Election process gathers steam
Political parties advised to campaign only after obtaining prior permission
Coimbatore: At an all-party meeting held at the collectorate on Tuesday, political parties contesting the mayoral elections were advised to campaign only after obtaining prior permission. With the model code of conduct coming into force from August 28, the authorities categorically declared that campaigns will not be allowed after 10 pm.
This is also applicable to radio and television, a release said. The party members have been asked to keep accounts of all their spending with bills. The vehicles that would be used by the political parties for campaign would also require prior permission. All canvassing tents should be 200 metres from the poll booth.
Irrespective of the number of polling booths in a particular area, each party is allowed only one canvassing tent. The party members are asked not to crowd near the polling stations.
The booth slips will be distributed five days before elections and will not contain names or symbols of parties.
The booth slips are to be printed on plain paper. On the day of election all party vehicles must have their passes affixed visibly on the vehicles. No one will be admitted into the polling booth without a slip. Loudspeakers should not be placed near polling booths.
The admission slips to booth agents will be given by the chief election officer. At the time of counting, only one booth agent will be allowed for each table, the release added.
On Tuesday, party cadres visited the housing units in Race Course to check the voters list and ascertain if the voters were in station or have moved out. Corporation commissioner S. Ganesh and the returning officer inspected the Government College of Technology which would be the counting centre and also inspected the room where the EVMs and ballot boxes will be placed until counting on September 22.
