Confusion over MBBS seats

Officials deny non-transparency charges in seat allocation

Chennai: Confusion prevailed over allotment of MBBS seats at Kilpauk Medical College on Tuesday when a few parents protested against the selection committee alleging non-transparency in seat allocation.

The final phase of MBBS /BDS counselling started on Monday and reallotment /allotment for government medical colleges and self financing medical colleges continued on the second day when a group of parents claimed that they were left to wait for long hours without reallotment.

One of the parents who protested said his daughter was not given the college she opted for. The directorate of medical education sought police help and only after a few hours did the agitated parents leave the premises.

When contacted, a senior official at the directorate of medical education said the counselling was being held in a transparent manner and seat matrix was being uploaded on the website www.tnhealth.org every day after the counselling.

“In the first and second phase of counselling all seats except 64 in government medical colleges were allotted. In this final phase, apart from reallotment, all 64 vacancies would be filled up. In the instructions, it is clearly stated that students who have already opted for a college cannot subsequently change their seat. On Tuesday, a few students opted for government colleges and admission letters were handed over to them. But, after seeing vacancy position in ESIC medical college in the city, they asked us to reallot,” the senior official clarified.

“We called 900 people for the final phase of counselling and reallotment / allotment in both self-financing and government medical colleges took place on Tuesday. Students, whose parents agitated on Tuesday, got admission in Sivagangai and Tiruvannamalai medical colleges. The counselling will conclude on Wednesday,” the official said.
