42 local bodies to get sewerage facilities
Chennai: Residents of the 42 local bodies adjoining the city will soon enjoy the benefits of their areas merging with Chennai corporation.
Civic amenities, particularly sewerage facilities that eluded them thus far are being readied at fast pace, officials said.
It appears the busy IT corridor might be among a few other areas to first reap the benefits of the merger. The CMWSSB (Chennai metropolitan water supply and sewerage board) is speeding up its work to complete the underground sewerage works in Sholinganallur-Karapakkam and Pallikaranai, the hub of software majors.
CMWSSB has set December 2014 and March 2016 as deadlines for Pallikaranai and Sholinganallur projects respectively.
CMWSSB has not done all that bad in a few other areas as well. After Alandur and Valasarawakkam, which already have operational underground sewerage (UGD) network, the board has promised sewerage facilities in six months for Maduravoyal, Perungudi, Porur, Ullagaram-Puzhuthivakkam, Palliakaranai and Ambattur where works are under progress at an estimated cost of Rs'333.53 crore.
Thiruvottiyur, Madhavaram and Ambattur (part) will follow suit once the Rs 203.6 crore works are taken up under TNUDP-III (TN Urban Development Programme) get over.
Kathivakkam, Ramapuram, Sholinganallur and Karapakkam are the other areas where works are apace to develop underground sewerage facilities at an estimated cost of Rs 245.55 crore under Chennai Mega City Development Mission 2012-13.
