PM Cameron rushes to Scotland; MPs request Queen to save the Union
London: The Scottish flag was hoisted over Downing Street on Tuesday as Prime Minister David Cameron launched a fresh push to stop Scots voting for independence next week, although it fell down on the first attempt. The blue and white saltire made it halfway up the flagpole above Mr Cameron’s office before it slipped down, but it is now in place and will remain there until the referendum on September 18.
Mr Cameron on Tuesday announced a last-minute trip to Scotland to campaign against independence as supporters of the United Kingdom rallied to counter a surge in separatist support ahead of referendum.
Mr Cameron and opposition Labour leader Ed Miliband agreed to skip their weekly debate in the House of Commons on Wednesday to head north after opinion polls indicated there was a real prospect of the 300-year-old union breaking up. Britain’s three main political parties united promised greater powers for Scotland if it rejects independence, in a last-ditch attempt to head off growing separatist support.
Former Labour PM Gordon Brown has taken the lead in the campaign to keep the UK together after an opinion poll at the weekend put the pro-independence “Yes” camp ahead for the first time.
Campaigners against independence took to the streets of Scotland's oil capital Aberdeen.
A group of British lawmakers have appealed to Queen Elizabeth II to intervene in the referendum debate to save the 300-year-old union with Scotland.
