Pharmaceutical companies to help students
Industry heads to assist universities in designing pharma curriculum
Visakhapatnam: With Vizag poised to become a pharmaceutical industry hub, many pharma companies operating in the region are ready to take keen interest in developing skills and employability of students pursuing pharmaceutical sciences courses in Andhra University and affiliated colleges.
At an interactive session of academia and industry on Monday, the need to include an industry oriented bridging course and compulsory apprenticeship as part of course curriculum BPharm, MPharm, B.Tech Chemical Engineering and allied courses was mooted. There are about 50 colleges with more than 5,000 students in and around Vizag which offer courses related to pharmaceutical sciences.
The session was organised by Vizag MP K. Hari Babu at Andhra University and was participated by senior academicians, industry heads and also other politicians from Vizag.
The university witnessed many suggestions being made on how to make the students more employable through problem solving oriented teaching methods and quality infrastructure.
However, issues were also pointed out at the session. While the industry raised the issue of low quality of students, the students pointed out that the industry never opens its doors for them, either for internships or for part-time jobs. K. Ramakrishna Rao, Chancellor of Gitam university said, “The industry needs to empathise with the students and allow them to learn practical skills through collaborating with universities and colleges and allowing internships.”
Vineet Bhushan of Hospira said, “We found that somewhere the industry lagged in communicating our requirements. But now we want it to change and we want regular interaction between colleges and industries. We want to visit colleges and want them to visit us.” Other industry heads also said that they are open to help universities and colleges to design curriculum and for industrial visits.
