Coimbatore:The organs of 56-year-old Devandran saved the life of three persons after his organs were harvested by a city hospital. The donor, who hails from Karnataka, was a victim of a road accident. The vehicle in which he was travelling rammed against a lorry near Annur on September 5.
According to Dr G. Baktavatsalam, chairman of K.G. Hospital, the scans revealed signinficant dysfunction of the brain and Devandran was declared brain dead on September 6 at 3.10 pm.
The patient's relatives were informed and the cadaver transplant coordinator of K.G. Hospital, C.B. Chandrasekaran, explained the process involved in the voluntary donation of organs.
The harvesting of multi organs was performed by a team of doctors, including Dr V.P. Shanmugasundaram, chief surgeon, Dr Ilangovan Veerappan, chief nephrologist, and Dr N.M. Balakrishnan, urologist.
Accordingly, the liver, kidneys and eyes were donated. One kidney each was donated to K.G. Hospital and Ramakrishna Hospital, liver to Miot Hospital, Chennai, and the eyes to Aravind Hospital.
