Election commissioner promises fair play

State election commissioner said his office would take action “if proper information with evidence is provided”

Chennai: State election commissioner S. Ayyar on Monday said his office would take action “if proper information with evidence is provided” and insisted it was improper to make wild allegations and sweeping statements.

Reacting to the allegations made by BJP leaders that their party candidates were prevented from filing nominations for the September 18 local body elections and some of them were even abducted, Mr Ayyar told DC that he had in fact ordered the suspension of the election officer and BDO at Settupattu panchayat union in Thiruvannamalai district following a complaint from the CPI (M) state secretary G. Ramakrishnan that his candidate’s nomination was rejected without proper reason.

“I probed this matter at once and found that the concerned poll officer had not followed the norms. I have directed the district collector to order his suspension and conduct proper enquiry. Similar swift action will be taken if such violations are brought to our notice in proper manner, with evidence”, Mr Ayyar said. When the DC contacted him for his version, the SEC was still working at his office though it was almost 11 p.m.
