Poor quality CCTVs at banks, ATMs help conmen

Bankers fail to install high mega pix cameras in city
Visakhapatnam: Fate of many cases related to fraudulent withdrawal of money from ATM counters of various banks and attempt to loot cash and valuables from banks and ATMs in Vizag city and other parts in the district lie in a limbo. Suspects are still at large mainly because cops found it difficult to identify the culprits with poor quality CCTV footage, which were installed in the ATMs and banks.
Recently, bike-borne goons snatched bags containing cash and valuables in front of banks in the city and more than a dozen incidents of futile attempt to commit theft at ATMs and banks were reported in the city. But, majority of those cases remained unsolved as the cops are groping in the dark with no leads coming their way due to poor quality cameras.
In the wake of rising incidents of crime in and around ATMs and banks, cops of crime wing and cyber crime investigation cell (CCIC) held a meeting with officials of various banks in the city around six months back to install advanced CCTV cameras (High Mega Pix and it cost around Rs15,000) at around 250 banks and 400 ATMs in the city to nab the conmen who try to loot bank customers in and around banks and ATM counters based on the CCTV footage.
“We can see the culprits as well as what has happened in the banks and ATMs after every crime in the footage, but when we try to zoom in to identify, the picture gets blurred due to the poor quality of the CCTV cameras insta-lled at many banks and ATMs,” says additional deputy commissioner of police (Crimes) S. Varada Raju.
“Despite our repeated appeal to bankers, many have ignored to install advanced CCTV cameras at banks and ATMS and in some ATM counters the cameras have not been functioning,” said the officer after verifying the functioning of CCTV cameras at banks and ATMS.
A senior police officer of CCIC said unguarded_ banks, ATMs, shops, complexes and residential apartments became soft targets for hardcore thieves.
“We have no powers to instruct the authorities of banks to install advanced cameras. The bankers are either installing poor quality cameras or simply ignoring that led to delay in investigation of many cases,” the police officer added.
