Vinayaka immersed in peace

The onus now lies with the corporation to clean up the beaches
Chennai: The city police’s efforts bore fruit as the city witnessed a peaceful procession of the 1,600-odd Ganesha idols that were immersed in the Bay of Bengal off Chennai’s many beaches on Sunday on the concluding day of the Vinayaka Chathurthi festival.The 18,000-odd police personnel deployed along the procession routes and various intelligence inputs ensured that there were no untoward incidents, a senior police officer said.
The organisers ensured that the city was painted saffron along the procession routes towards the five immersion points — Foreshore Estate, Kasimedu, Tiruvottiyur, Neelankarai and Ennore.The processions started around 1.30 pm from various points and immersion activities were wound up before 6 pm, the police said. Enthusiastic members of Hindu outfits viz. Hindu Makkal Katchi, Shiv Sena, Hindu Munnani, Hindu Maha Sabha participated in the procession.
The idols were transported on vans or bullock carts and were accompanied by a police official. The idols were lowered from the vehicles and picked up by huge cranes for immersion.
